Why vinyl works so well on stairs
Stairs get more daily wear than almost any other surface, and vinyl is one of the only materials that's fully waterproof, scratch-resistant, and quiet underfoot at the same time. For basement stairs that see snowmelt and groceries, or households with dogs that struggle on hardwood, it holds up in ways carpet and bare wood both eventually give out on. If a softer surface matters more to you, compare it with carpet stairs.
Providence Flooring builds vinyl stair systems across South Jersey using the same plank as the adjoining luxury vinyl plank floor, so the staircase reads as one continuous surface instead of a separate project.

The nosing detail most vinyl stair jobs skip
Most LVP manufacturers don't sell a matching stair nosing out of the box, which is why a lot of DIY vinyl stairs end up with a mismatched aluminum trim strip at the front edge. We solve it two ways - factory nosings when they're available, and nosings we mill in-house from the same plank when they're not.
- 20 and 30 mil wear layers rated for heavy traffic
- Slip-resistant, micro-textured surface
- Click-lock or glue-down installation depending on the staircase
- Custom-milled nosings matched to any plank we carry

Learn moreGetting a stair install that won't squeak or lift
Vinyl stairs typically fail one of two ways: the plank lifts at the nosing from poor adhesion, or the tread underneath was never leveled and every step squeaks. We use construction adhesive plus hidden fasteners behind the nosing and skim-coat every tread flat before the plank goes down, so the staircase feels as solid as hardwood stairs without the upkeep. Vinyl Flooring Stairs - frequently asked questions
Yes - modern LVP is embossed with a micro-textured surface rated for stair use, and it's generally more slip-resistant than polyurethaned hardwood.
We remove the carpet, padding, staples, and tack strip first, check the treads, and either level them or replace damaged ones before the plank goes down.
Not when installed correctly. Re-securing every tread and adding construction adhesive before laying the plank usually makes the staircase quieter than it was before.
We mill one in-house from the same plank so the front edge of each stair matches exactly. Get a free estimate to see options for your staircase.
