Why we treat stairs as their own trade
Ryan Soldano's background is finish carpentry, and stairs are where that experience matters most - custom nosings, tight riser joints, and a staircase that doesn't creak after year one all come down to fit-and-finish skill that flooring alone doesn't teach. Providence Flooring designs and builds hardwood staircases across South Jersey with that same carpentry-first approach.
We handle the whole job in one trip: demo of the old surface, leveling the stringers underneath, custom-milling nosings when a manufacturer doesn't stock one, and finishing to match the rest of your home. Learn more about our story.

Solid or engineered treads
Solid oak, maple, or hickory treads are the traditional choice and can be sanded and refinished multiple times over the life of the stairs.
Engineered treads make more sense when you're tying into an existing engineered hardwood floor, or building over a slab foundation - they're less prone to seasonal movement and finish out looking identical to solid wood.
- Red oak, white oak, maple, hickory, and walnut in stock
- Stain color-matched to your existing hardwood using sample boards
- Open, boxed, curved, and winding staircase styles
- Custom-milled nosings when the manufacturer doesn't offer one

Learn moreHow the project runs day to day
Day one is demo and prep - old carpet or treads come out, the staircase gets vacuumed, and any loose stringers get shimmed so nothing squeaks later. Day two is installation: treads, risers, and nosings go in with adhesive and hidden finish nails. Day three is finishing - stain if you've chosen one, several coats of polyurethane, and a final walk-through. If your project also includes new hardwood flooring on the level above, we usually run both in the same visit.

Matching the stairs to the rest of the house
Most homeowners want the staircase to disappear into the rest of the floor plan rather than stand out as a separate project, so we pull from the same stain batch used on your hardwood flooring and match the sheen. If a deliberate contrast is more your style - painted risers with dark treads, for instance - we'll mock it up on a sample board first so there are no surprises on install day.

Hardwood stair pricing in South Jersey
Most homes have 13-16 stairs. Pricing below is per stair, materials and labor included. Every quote is fixed - no surprise add-ons.
| Option | Typical price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Red oak treads + risers, clear finish | $165 - $215 per stair | Most requested option |
| White oak or maple treads, stained | $195 - $260 per stair | Color-matched to your floor |
| Engineered hardwood treads | $175 - $235 per stair | Best over slab foundations |
| Walnut or hickory treads | $230 - $310 per stair | Premium species |
Final pricing depends on stair count, stringer condition, and finish choice - we quote the full job after an in-home visit, and that quote doesn't change on install day.
Hardwood Stairs - frequently asked questions
Yes. We strip the carpet, padding, and tack strip, then check the treads underneath. Sound treads get built on directly; damaged particleboard treads get replaced first.
A standard 14-step staircase usually runs 2 to 3 days start to finish - demo, install, then finish. You can use the stairs the next morning, with a full cure around a week later.
That's the goal. We bring stain samples to your home and brush them onto the actual wood species before ordering anything, so you're picking from real color, not a printed swatch. See examples from recent projects.
We finish with a satin or matte polyurethane that has a lower slip rating than gloss, and we can tuck discreet anti-slip strips under the nosing for households with kids or older relatives.
