Real wood on top, stability underneath

Engineered hardwood is genuine wood veneer bonded to a layered plywood core, and that core is the whole point - it resists the cupping and gapping that solid wood can develop when humidity swings hard from a July heat wave to a damp fall week. For homes near the bay or the barrier islands, that stability isn't a nice-to-have, it's usually the deciding factor.

Providence Flooring sources engineered hardwood from established mills and installs it across South Jersey, from crawlspace ranch homes to newer builds on slab. See how recent installs turned out before you book your own.

What you get that solid wood can't offer

Beyond the humidity tolerance, engineered construction opens up options solid hardwood simply doesn't.

  • Stable over concrete slabs and radiant heat systems
  • Available in wider planks than solid wood typically allows
  • Factory finishes with tough aluminum-oxide topcoats
  • Floats, glues, or nails down - whatever the subfloor calls for
  • Can be refinished once or twice, depending on wear-layer thickness

Picking a species and finish

Oak is the default for good reason - durable, takes stain evenly, and available in nearly any width or tone. We also carry maple, walnut, and hickory for homeowners after a different look, with finishes ranging from a clean matte to hand-scraped and wire-brushed textures that hide everyday dings well. For a broader look at solid options too, see our main hardwood flooring page.

How we get it right on your subfloor

Before anything gets installed we test moisture on concrete, check flatness across the whole room, and inspect plywood subfloors for soft spots. That inspection decides whether we float, glue, or nail the floor down - it's not a one-size answer. If your project also includes a staircase, hardwood stairs get quoted and built separately with matching nosing details.

Engineered Hardwood - frequently asked questions

Because the plywood core doesn't move the way solid wood does when humidity shifts, and that's a bigger factor in coastal Atlantic and Cape May County homes than it is further inland. Check our service area if you're not sure we cover your town.

Yes, if the wear layer is thick enough - usually 3mm or more allows one or two sandings. Thinner wear layers can often be screened and recoated instead.

Yes, this is one of the strongest cases for choosing engineered over solid hardwood. We follow manufacturer acclimation guidelines closely to avoid gapping.

Floating installs faster and repairs more easily. Glue-down feels more solid underfoot and is quieter. We'll recommend one after seeing your subfloor at the free estimate.
